I just got back from seeing the Transformers. The movie’s great! The special effects, the acting, the story all jelled. Nary a false noted was sounded. Almost constant action with edge of your seat excitement throughout, combined with a generous amount of humor made for an excellent evening at the theater.

This one will definitely find a place on my video shelf as soon as it comes out.

Went to see Fantastic 4: Raise of the Silver Surfer yesterday (7/1/2007). I liked it. Needless to say the effects were fantastic. The acting and the story were well done and faithful to the original story I read almost 40 years ago. I also really liked the commentary on society”s obsession with celebrity doings at the expense of other things, even the end of the world.

The story though well known to fans of the comic had been tweaked enough to be up to date without losing the essence of the original. Although I’m not generally a fan of sequels, this one wasn’t bad. Hopefully, we won’t be drowned in sequels since they tend to suck the air out of space needed to produce new ideas.

I noticed the other day that plans were afoot to return Star Trek to the big screen with a story about a young Kirk. My first reaction was, “Why”? Don’t get me wrong, I love Trek. I’ve seen every movie and watched every iteration of the television show (yes, even Enterprise). I’ve enjoyed them for the most part.

As time has gone on however I’ve started to resent being stuck on-board the bridge of the Federation Starship Enterprise. In a universe that is suppose to be populated by hundreds of intelligent species and thousands of human colonies; with a star fleet composed of thousands of ships, space stations and bases with their assorted crews, why must we be condemned to served eternally on the Enterprise. Are there no other stories?

From time to time someone will put out a web-based fan product such as the current effort, Of Gods and Men. These are of varying quality and interest. One thing you can be sure of is they will all be somehow connected to the Enterprise or current or past members of her crew. Of Gods and Men is peopled by the usual retreads. The same old tired characters doing the same things.

This is boring. There are thousands of stories to be told in the Star Trek universe. The New Frontier books by Peter David concerning the crew of the USS Excalibur are but one example of what could be done to keep the Trek universe alive, fresh and vital.

More of the same is needed. Stories concerning other ships or star bases and their crews, as well as ordinary folks can be told not only in print but in the theaters, on the internet and on television. I bet there would be an audience, even among those, like myself who are tired of the same old retread, those who could care less about Trek and ardent fans for interesting well told stories during which the names Kirk, Picard or Enterprise are not uttered once. I’d like to see someone try.
